Alec Soth is an American photographer situated in the Midwest. His work is highly influenced by the exploration of the American Midwest, away from the highway. His work is explorative, and often transcends beyond photographs, drawing inspiration and creating a body of work with the use of text, found letters, and video. Gathered Leaves (2015) exhibition and accompanying book set showcased a selection of his most well know and iconic work, including work from Broken Manual (2011), and Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004) amongst others.
"I long for stories. They satisfy. Novels and movies satisfy, but photographs often leave me feel like something is missing. I'm trying to work on this."
- Alec Soth,2004
To create the visual portrait I have drawn inspiration from the influence of travel and exploration around America evident in Soth's work. I have also referenced his use of things other than photographs. This was particularly evident in the series, Niagara (2006), where he included found love letters.
In order to compile all of these elements I created a digital collage on Photoshop.
